Tomorrow, Thursday March 5th 2009 is the closing of my little experiment with an idea I have had for a few years now. It’s called Denomination.
“Denomination” explores religion as a brand and media as a vehicle. Angela explains “I created a body of work that speaks in a graphic language about the influence of religion in culture. The goal of Denomination is to challenge attitudes by exploring religious denominations within the realms of family, class, and category.” Displaying elements of repetition and minimal color, “Denomination” speaks plainly about the influence of religious denomination, particularly in western culture. Here three of the largest religions are compared to the other ‘big three’: CBS, NBC and ABC. Brand as mark, brand as definition, and over the centuries, branding religion.
It is a big topic, which I plan to explore further in the future with other mediums. I have some ideas in the works. My personal goal with this project was to approach this as narrative on man made ideas vs. something that is less tangible and harder to describe. Everyone arrives at there own conclusion. We are born alone, and die alone. I defiantly have my own beliefs but it’s not something I am going to make my life’s work to push other folks into a submission of sorts. My intention is to comment, and create a visual language of sorts. What the viewer takes from that belongs to them.
