Erica Felicella Photography asked me to collaborate with her on this project for Luna Matto. Naturally, I was super stoked because she is such a talent and force within the Dallas arts community. Collaboration has been in the works for a few years, I hope this is a new trend we might explore further.

Erica shot the duo. And I added my illustrative touch to it.

Here are two versions, one that is a digital Illustration and a hand drawn Illustration. Based on the wishes/instruction Luna Matto provided this is the first draft.

I used:
- a Pilot razor pen.
- a scanner.
- a few PS brushes.
- old sketchbook i had from 2002
- music by Luna Matto.

This isn't the final by any means but I'm excited about the progress.

It’s been a while.

What’s new? Lots has changed, and thankfully for the better. The moving dust has settled and I can finally wrap my head around the BIG move to Southern, VT.

I left a very stable job and moved to the great North East with my partner. I can already see how the green environment is going to impact the way I approach design and life. There are so many opportunities to engage design in a holistic way, and as I make my way through the Northerners strange customs, I hope to share my new work.

I have made a few contacts in a short month with a variety of design agencies. There is plenty of work here for a graphic designer. I have also met some ridiculously talented and humble artists’ like Fiber Artist Jackie Abrams. Her work is impressive and sustainable ranging from baskets made from consumer bags to teaching in small remote villages worldwide. I hope to glean some knowledge from her. In addition to meeting new folks, I am collaborating with the Brattleboro Women’s Film Festival and Art show! More details to come on that.

Besides networking, being a city kid---I am kind of embarrassed saying that I had never picked fruit or really seen vegetables in their whole environment which is among the fun activities here in VT! Things like apple picking and blueberry picking. I will have to post a recipe or something. I think cooking aids my design creativity, and it might be a new hobby.

Goals for this year include: Acquire the gusto to branch out in all facets, like a holistic lifestyle, more community work and a focus on my personal art goal. More to come on all of that...

Phase 1 of 2009 Deep Ellum Mural Project begins

DALLAS, TX- The Deep Ellum Community Association renews the rich landscape of independent art that is the life blood of Deep Ellum with Phase I of the 2009 Deep Ellum Mural Project.

Kettle Art Gallery opens for an evening of works by the artists scheduled to Mural the Project's Good Latimer Corridor - Saturday, June 27 at 7p.m.

Phase I of the 2009 Mural Project will feature murals along the Good Latimer/DART rail line in the very area that the Good Latimer Tunnel Murals are buried. Dart line passengers will exit the Deep Ellum rails and be welcomed with murals from Phase I artists: Luke Harnden, Cathey Miller, Sergio Garcia, Mark Nelson, Brian Crawford, Amber Campagna, Issac Brown, Issac Davies, Tyson Summers, Judith Lea Perkins and Frank Campagna.
Murals will begin along the corridor in July and August.

(The murals will be across the street from the Reel FX Deep Ellum Gateway Traveling Man.)

clouds - mammatus

Lat week we witnessed this type of cloud formation in North Texas. I hadn't seen this type of cloud, since i made a cloud book for my friend Megan in 1994. Might be a surprise that i was a science nerd in middle school (ha!) but we did a segment on clouds that i remember till this day. So here is a little background on this type called mammata.

No Photoshoppery here - Mammatus clouds are formed when the air is saturated with rain droplets and/or ice crystals, and begins to sink. They don’t precede a tornado or presage a storm; the worst of the storm is usually over when Mammatus are seen. The name “mammatus” is derived from the Latin mamma (breast), for the way they hang down, seeming to offer … something.

Funny thing about that night is I got into a bidding war with this couple over a Mixed Media printmaking piece. Turns out they bought the piece i was bidding on and my own. The Event turned out great, hats off to Kristin Schutz & Ms. Lightfoot!

2006 New.inddHello Blogtastic! I’m borrowing from my friend Felicella, which you can still blog after months, and I mean it’s been five months! As long as you apologize to the blog and bring it flowers and candy. We're good.

What has happened see is that my world has just expanded, exploded, and become much warmer. What’s all this Victorian speak? Yea! Wouldn't you like to know? :) SO HAY, after my love heroine hiatus! There still lots of love, I am just going to share some with you now.

Tomorrow, Thursday March 5^th 2009 is the closing of my little experiment with an idea I have had for a few years now. It’s called Denomination.

“Denomination” explores religion as a brand and media as a vehicle. Angela explains “I created a body of work that speaks in a graphic language about the influence of religion in culture. The goal of Denomination is to challenge attitudes by exploring religious denominations within the realms of family, class, and category.” Displaying elements of repetition and minimal color, “Denomination” speaks plainly about the influence of religious denomination, particularly in western culture. Here three of the largest religions are compared to the other ‘big three’: CBS, NBC and ABC. Brand as mark, brand as definition, and over the centuries, branding religion.

It is a big topic, which I plan to explore further in the future with other mediums. I have some ideas in the works. My personal goal with this project was to approach this as narrative on man made ideas vs. something that is less tangible and harder to describe. Everyone arrives at there own conclusion. We are born alone, and die alone. I defiantly have my own beliefs but it’s not something I am going to make my life’s work to push other folks into a submission of sorts. My intention is to comment, and create a visual language of sorts. What the viewer takes from that belongs to them.

Tonight at the Lakewood, Tim addressed a group of audiophiles about the beginnings of the music genome project. He explained how the algorithms worked with the sets of stations that a user creates. It was really fascinating! Geek Moment. How do they do it??

The short version is, imagine a room filled with a team of people armed with headphones. Each inflection, tonal quality or harmony is recorded on a spreadsheet. This process of categorizing music is similar to binary code. The listener assigns a property based on each song’s musicology. Melody, harmony and rhythm, arrangement and lyrics etc... A pop song can average about 2 minutes, where as a symphony can average 2 hrs of deciphering, all based on the complexity of the categories. Some artists such as Amy Winehouse and Beck are hard to categorize. No surprise, since those two cross genres within songs. Music Mathematics!

Pandora’s goal? Global Radio. De-homogenize Radio. (Can I get an AMEN?!) I really could go on and on.

Fun Fact 1: at this moment Pandora uses a third of the bandwidth YouTube uses.
Fun Fact 2: 3 million users…satellite radio’s days are numbered.

Andy Warhol is one of my top favorites. To me he is the non-challant court jester of art. But I think Andy knew exactly what he was achieving with his short answers and detached demeanor. not many people are aware that his last series included a remake of Divinci's last supper and other icons familiar to catholics. As he was a devout catholic who went to mass weekly and prayed with his mother---what you say?!! crazy.

These are just a few ripe with symbolisim. I think its interesting that he choose a cat to be draped over the infant JC. You could trace that back to the old masters like Rembrant when they used felines as symbols of prosperity or evil, just depends on the way the feline is shown. Or Andy just being Andy.

Lots of good people came to Art Con's SEED. Great Music and some really good journal art from Dallas darlings. Richard Ross, Kim Cadmus Owens, Courtney Helm really made some killer stuff.
It’s truly awesome, to work along side the founders and the people that work for pure reward of giving back to the community.
Erica, Andrea, Cari, SJ, Karla, Leah, Jason, Paul, Serena, and ALL of the volunteers---truly rock the house!

I will eventually post the journal I made. Got some really great images out of it. Here is page #111 out of 192. ---The idea was to explore media as its own entity. The conflicting views that were served on a daily basis, and that we parse through. Organizing those thoughts in 192 pages of pure moleskin action--FUN.

I love art, for me it is a way to live.
A way for me to live is to never read this sentence again.

Self proclaimed “Artist for Life” [Jane Doe] feels that her art is derived from living.
It’s really hard to paint when you are dead. Unless somebody tapes a brush in your hand, and then I guess you could, kind of like de Kooning, but more dead.

Painting is my real life’s path.
You should really wait until it dries, or else you are going to track that shit all over the house.

I believe we can see beautiful art everywhere we look. I believe that by opening people to new experiences and ideas, it can open their arts to others.
Also their ivers and their idneys.

The most important thing is to be truthful to your own expression, to your own unique life.
I think in this particular instance, it would help you more if you lied.

Like this person for example:
Her works are found in private collections and some of the most famous museums in nations throughout the world
…but don’t ask me which ones because then I would have to kill you.

Working on a 50's artist's, re-master disc. So I'm researching the 1950's Man Bands, and I ran across this gem. I STILL LOVE this song. so simple. I think that you should watch it without sound.
